In this session we’re exploring divorce in Israel, focusing on religious law and the personal struggles behind legal and cultural systems. Film: “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” (2014), directed by Ronit Elkabetz and Shlomi Elkabetz. Summary: Viviane Amsalem fights to obtain a divorce in Israel, navigating a complex legal and religious system that tests her patience, resilience, and sense of justice. Pre-screening talk highlights include the filmmakers behind the story, divorce in Israel and the rabbinical court system, and challenges faced by women seeking a religious divorce (including Agunot’s situation).
