About This Event

In 2025, Ford’s Theatre commissioned and staged the world premiere of “The American Five,” written by Sixth & I’er Chess Jakobs, which was named the #1 show in the region. The play brings to life the relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and four of his closest confidants in the days leading up to the March on Washington, wrestling with questions of race, power, faith, identity, and solidarity, including the often-overlooked stories of a Jewish member (Stanley Levison) and a queer member (Bayard Rustin) of Dr. King’s inner circle, as well as Coretta Scott King and Clarence B. Jones. In this two-part class, co-led by Chess Jakobs and Rabbi Jenna, experience live scenes from The American Five, performed by actors, and place them in conversation with Jewish wisdom, text, and tradition. Come to one class or both. January 27 Class — Tikkun olam: text study and discussion.
