About This Event

Religious authorities have long twisted holy text to amplify hate, bigotry, and shame. What if their interpretations were fundamentally flawed? What if there were different ways to look at our bodies and human connection, interpretations steeped in love and compassion, that are equally grounded in Judaism’s ancient canon? In Body Politics, students will discover hidden meanings within the Bible’s most ostensibly oppressive texts to show how our tradition meant them to inspire joy, closeness, and love. What if the story of Sodom and Gomorrah was not about condemning homosexuality? What if the creation of humanity paved the way for gender diversity? What if sex was meant for more than simply procreation? What if Judaism was about love? Led by Rabbi Eliana Fischel, Body Politics will champion the openheartedness at the core of Jewish identity, inspiring compassion for all of God’s children. Classes: - Class 1: It’s Adam & Eve… & Steve, and Non-Binary Folk - Class 2: Just 10 Good Men: A Different Look at Sodom & Gomorrah - Class 3: When Is It Property & When Is It Life? - Class 4: It’s Menstruation, Not a Moral Failure - Class 5: A Scripture of Pleasure Pricing (as listed on page): Cost per person is $175 for WHC members, $200 for non-Members. Class-only (dinner not included) price is $125/$150.
